Please take them off before any showering, pool, or ocean. Make sure lotion and perfume is dried before putting the piece on as well. Substances such as nail polish remover, chlorine, and perfume may react with metal/plating jewelry to cause it to tarnish. This is true too for sweat- make sure to remove your jewelry when exercising or doing any heavy work. You can gently clean with a soft dry towel.
